Terms of Use

These terms govern your use of jvmscope.com. Reading the site means accepting them. They are written to be read once, so they are kept short and specific.

The site is operated by JVM Scope (Marcus Venn), reachable at contact@jvmscope.com. Contact and controller details are in the privacy policy.

1. What the site is

A technical publication. Articles are editorial content: analysis, experiments and opinion about the JVM and the software built on it. Nothing here is professional advice, and nothing here is offered as a service, a product or a contract for goods.

The site is free to read, requires no account, and collects no payment. There is no subscription to cancel and therefore no withdrawal right to exercise; your statutory rights as a consumer under EU law are unaffected by anything in this document.

2. The prose

Articles, page text, the JVM Scope name and the site’s visual design are protected by copyright and remain the property of the operator. All rights are reserved.

You may, without asking:

• Quote from an article for commentary, criticism, teaching or news reporting, with attribution to JVM Scope and a link to the source article.
• Link to any page, including deep links to individual articles.
• Read the plain-Markdown version of any article at its .md address, and quote from it on the same terms.

You may not republish an article in full, translate and republish it, or use its text to train a model marketed as a substitute for the original, without written permission. Requests are usually granted; ask.

3. The code samples

Code samples in articles are yours to use. Copy them, modify them, ship them, with or without attribution, in commercial or non-commercial work. No licence text needs to be reproduced.

They are provided as is. A snippet in an article is written to demonstrate a runtime behaviour clearly, which is not the same as being production-ready: error handling is frequently elided, and benchmark code is tuned to isolate one effect rather than to be a general-purpose implementation. Test what you take.

4. Accuracy and versions

Runtime behaviour is version-specific. An article states the JDK release, and where relevant the collector, the flags and the hardware it was measured on. That behaviour may differ on another build, a different vendor’s JDK, or a later release — this is a property of the subject matter, not a defect in the article.

Content is provided without warranty of accuracy, completeness or fitness for a particular purpose. Corrections are welcome and are made in place, with a revised date on the article.

5. Availability

The site is served as static files and is intended to stay available, but no uptime is promised. Articles may be revised, superseded or withdrawn. Where a URL is retired, a redirect is added when it is reasonable to do so.

6. Acceptable use

You may read, cache and share pages freely. You may not attempt to disrupt the service, circumvent its security, or extract content by means that degrade availability for other readers. Automated crawling is permitted within the limits of /robots.txt; the site publishes a Markdown twin of every article precisely so that machine readers do not have to scrape HTML.

7. External links

Articles link to JDK source, specifications, issue trackers and other people’s writing. Those destinations are outside the operator’s control, and linking to one is not an endorsement of everything on it. Their terms and privacy practices apply once you leave.

8. Liability

To the extent permitted by law, the operator is not liable for loss arising from reliance on the content of this site — including any loss of data, profit or availability resulting from applying a technique, flag or code sample described here to your own systems.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, for intent or gross negligence, or for any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded. Where you are a consumer, your mandatory rights under the law of your country of residence remain unaffected, and nothing here deprives you of the protection of provisions that cannot be derogated from by agreement.

9. Changes to these terms

Terms may change. The revision date at the top of this page marks the current version, and continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the revised text.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the operator’s place of establishment, without prejudice to the mandatory consumer protections of your country of residence within the EU or EEA.
